As far as the clothing world goes, intimates are often considered to be one of the most necessary components of everyday wear. But despite being practical in nature, intimates have developed over time into extremely varied, fashionable garments that take on many forms. From bras to chemises and everything in between, there's nothing quite like finding lingerie that fits well and makes you feel like you have the world in the palm of your hand.
In addition to a huge selection of bras, briefs and panties, we have a stylish range of chemises, bodysuits and pantyhose to keep you looking and feeling your best no matter what the occasion is. Need to feel comfortable while working out? Check out our sports bras. Interested in adding some sensuality into an evening with that special someone? Our chemises will do just the trick. Want to make sure your silhouette is smooth? We also have a great selection of shapewear that quite literally has your back.
Mary Phelps Jacob created the first "brassiere" from nothing more than pocket handkerchiefs and ribbon while getting ready for a debutante ball in 1913, but intimate apparel still had a long way to go. The corset stayed popular until well into the 1920s, as the design itself became less rigid and allowed a wider range of movement. But as corsets and girdles began shedding earlier conventions, so too did society in general. Dress hemlines became shorter as women became bolder. As the brash flapper dress came into prominence, many of its wearers even started going without traditional underwear in order to wear designs with plunging backs.
It wasn't until the rise of Hollywood in the 1930s and actresses like Claudette Colbert and Carole Lombard that the modern brassiere really began to take off. Fashion trends called for underwear that was supportive and went well under both form-fitting day dresses and satin evening gowns. Advertisements from this time period depict bras and two-piece undergarment sets as the logical choice for modern, glamorous women. The post WWII boom of the 1950s lead to cone-shaped bras, silk panties, pantyhose, girdles, negligees and even petticoats making their way into undergarment fashion.
This eventually gave way to the rebellious 60s and 70s, which saw women favoring more natural figures. Intimate apparel again became more toned down, with minimally padded bras rising in popularity and panties lowing their waistlines to sit at the hips rather than the bellybutton. Slips and chemises likewise became shorter as skirts rose up above the knee. Many women even did away with bras altogether for a time, though they were back in full force among the general population by the 80s. Chemises and "teddies" also surged as bedroom options.
Of course, the only thing certain about the fashion world is that change is constant. Pop stars like Madonna (and later, Britney Spears) began wearing lingerie as performance outfits, inspiring women to not want to keep their undergarments totally hidden while in public. The rise of Victoria's Secret throughout the 80s, 90s and 2000s promoted the idea that underwear can be high fashion, resulting in more artistic lingerie designs.
Intimate Apparel Types
Today's bras may be fashionable, but their primary purpose is still function. Whether your chest is small, large or somewhere in between, the right-fitting bra provides support and comfort through day to day activities. They come in a tremendous amount of variations, perhaps more so now than in any other time period. Many women own a range of different bras to suit their diverse lifestyle, from sports bras and everyday T-shirt shirt bras to sexy bralettes and push ups. And regardless of the shirt or dress style being worn over it, there's a bra that will fit perfectly underneath thanks to newer designs both with straps and without.
Many people still use the terms "briefs" and "panties" interchangeably. But if you want to know your fashion lingo like a pro, it's important to know the difference. Women's briefs are very similar to panties in look and style, the key differences being that briefs usually contain a seam or small fold (and often a little extra fabric as a result) and also generally have a higher waistline with taller side openings (more thigh is exposed). Many people feel more secure and comfortable wearing briefs throughout the day as opposed to panties or thongs, though of course there's no wrong choice here.
Panties are the most common lower undergarments used today by women. They are usually quite form fitting, but their designs vary greatly. Everyday panties are fairly straightforward, often coming in bulk packs in different color variations. Other panty designs have ruffling, side straps and other embellishments to add more allure to the wearer.
A chemise is a revealing, sleeveless form of lingerie that is often worn only for special occasions, ahem, in the bedroom. Some women may nevertheless choose to wear them under dresses in lieu of a slip or other form of lingerie, while others may wear them as sleep wear. But regardless of how exactly you want to use a chemise, the good news is that there are tons of different designs to choose from in terms of pattern and design. Ever try a silk chemise? They look-- and feel-- amazing.
Let's face it-- for many of us, shapewear is among our best of friends. There's just nothing quite like being able to wear any outfit in our closet and know that there's going to be no unwanted ripple effect or weird bulge. While modern-day corsets are definitely included here, they are just one option among many shapewear designs of nylon and spandex.
Many of today's women use shapewear on a regular basis for just these reason, and it is just as easy to wear as any panty or bra. A lot of shapewear is really just regular panties or pantyhose with a built in control top. Shapewear usually comes in subtle black, brown and tan hues, allowing it to sit unannounced underneath clothing (but of course if you want to announce it, go for it!).
While pantyhose is not worn nearly as often these days as it was in decades past, it seems that most of us still like to don them for at least some outfits throughout the year. Hey, they make any leg look instantly toned, and they pair beautifully with a good pair of closed-toe heels. As a bonus, many pairs automatically come with control-top panels.
The sport style bra, or simply, "sports bra" is as supportive as they come. Though they come in many different designs, racerback styles are the most popular because they prevent the possibility of any straps slipping during movement. Still, it's a good idea to think about exactly what kind of activities you'll be doing while wearing the bra before deciding on which one is right for you. For example, high movement and intensity activities (like crossfit, running or martial arts) will do better with a padded (at least lightly) sports bra that has a higher front cut.
If the regular bra were a woman, the bralette would be its younger sister. This type of bra has less material overall than a standard bra, and it usually doesn't have much padding, if any. For a sexy yet casual look, opt for a lace bralette with a higher strap / front cut and pair it with a wide or low neck shirt.
The underwire bra is a great everyday bra that provides extra support for those who need it. In fact, most bras with any real kind of padding have underwire. The wire helps to hold the shape of the cups and therefore keep everything in place, and you know what? The contour it adds looks great.
These bras provide a little extra oomph right where you want it. But contrary to popular belief, the push up bra is actually most commonly used for support rather than just for a bit of natural-looking enhancement. This type of bra is also incredibly comfortable (thanks to the additional padding) and also goes with a wide range of outfits.

It's hard not to admire the balcony bra. While most other bra designs add more materials to create contour and fuller cleavage, the balcony bra actually removes some fabric and padding. This low-cut bra is often light on padding may not provide a full cup, though its careful design still creates a very full look and has basic support. We love this style for it ingenuity and daring vibe.
We love a little drama in our lives, and the plunge bra implies just that. This dramatic design has a deep V-neck, allowing for more cleavage to show. The cups are also a little more elongated than usually, with the tops of them sloping up to connect with the straps. This bra of course pairs wonderfully with many plunging neckline shirts and dresses.
The basis for the bandeau design is a strip of cloth going across the chest. Of course, modern bandeaus consist of a tad more than this, but they do retain an overall simpler look than most other bra designs. While it may look like a strapless bra at first, the key difference here is that the bandeau slips on overhead instead of having a clasp / closure like a regular strapless bra. Bandeaus range from regular undergarments for sleeveless clothing to casual outwear tops.
No, wireless bras don't provide any hidden tech features (ha. ha. We'll see ourselves out now). As their name actually suggests, these bras do not contain any underwire. Instead, they provide support solely from the formation of the padding and / or foam, or even from the fabric itself. They often have a thicker strap around the base of the cups in order to make up for the lack of underwire support and to prevent the material from folding over on itself. It's actually a really comfortable design and works great as a T-shirt bra.
Most women have at least one outfit that requires the use of a strapless bra. After all, halter top dresses and off-the-shoulder shirts look fantastic on their own and don't need bra straps sticking out and interfering with the look. The good news is that many strapless bras are convertible and can have straps added and removed as necessary.
Let me see that thong! The modern thong has been around for a lot longer than the famous 1999 hit, "Thong Song", but its prevalence in pop culture saw it rise in the early 2000s and stay popular through the 2010s. This simple design is not for everybody, but for those that have discovered just how comfortable and freeing it can be, the thong is the everyday underwear of choice (check out cotton thongs). For others, its simply fun to have as an option (look at velvet thongs to put the intimate in "intimates").
Whether its briefs or panties, the bikini style is by far the most popular when it comes to women's underwear. This comfy style generally sits on the mid hip and has high leg openings, resembling early bikini swimsuit cuts. Bikini panties come in a wide range of styles, with graphic prints gaining in popularity in recent years.
That said, modern high waisted panties are not like those of your grandmother. They are conventionally stylish, with cool lace designs and teasing cut-outs. We'll also just go ahead and mention here that they make your butt look fantastic. Seriously.
Hipster panties offer a cute, boyish look with a low, straight cut across the top and low-cut leg openings. They've grown in popularity throughout the 21st Century thanks to the fact that they work well with both curvy and narrow-framed women. Hipsters are also a great choice for low-rise pants and skirts because there's very little chance of them riding up.

This style of panty refers specifically to how the back of it is cut (the front can more or less be any style). Yes, Brazilian panties really are all about that booty. It has a wider cut than a thong and generally covers at least the top of your behind, but there's noticeably less material here than with the standard bikini style or hipster cut. Try Brazilian panties with lace pieces for an extra playful feel.
Lace has been used in women's intimate apparel for centuries now, although these days most come with the addition of inner cotton or synthetic lining for comfort and sweat control. Lace intimates offer a feminine, flirty look, and we're particularly in love with lace bodysuits for those extra daring moments.
If you've never tried silk intimates, you owe it to yourself to give it a go sometime. Silk slides gently on the skin and is among the least irritating fabrics in existence. In fact, it's no wonder that this material has been used in undergarments for thousands of years now. Kendall Jenner has even made a habit of wearing silk chemises and camisoles as shirts.
There are a lot of strong opinions when it comes to black underwear (many definitely perpetuated by the 1999 movie, 10 Things I Hate About You, which labeled black underwear as purely sex-driven). However, black underwear is also very practical because it goes well under sheer, dark colored clothing. It also just looks great on every skin tone and every body type.
Beige intimates were popular for much of the 20th Century and remain so in the 21st Century. Beige is a somewhat lighter, more cream-colored cousin of nude, and it blends in well under a wide variety of clothing colors.

This is the most traditional color of all when it comes to intimate apparel, and it continues to be a go-to in modern times. In addition to working well beneath most outerwear colors, we love white intimates because they provide a fresh, clean feel. It's just hard to go wrong here.
This is fun color to have in your closet in general, so why not spread the love to your intimate apparel? Purple intimates fill in the gap between sensual colors like red and black and lighter hues like white and beige. Purple bras and panties can even have simple designs and still look highly fashionable with their color alone.
Dark blue intimates go wonderfully under dark clothing while still having a sense of color. It also works beautifully with most skin tones and body types. And while dark blue is found in a wide range of intimate apparel materials, there's just something about dark blue lace that is especially beautiful.
Every woman should have at least one set of nude colored intimates. People with lighter and mid-range skin tones will appreciate nude colors for blending in and working well with more revealing clothing styles. By contrast, nude intimates can be particularly eye-catching on darker skin tones, invoking sensuality in a more subtle way than other colors.

Intimates Brands You Should Know
This area of the fashion industry is far more than just Victoria's Secret and Calvin Klein (though we do love those brands as well). If you're looking to upgrade the intimates section of your wardrobe, these are the brands that are taking things to the next level:
Intimate Apparel Trends to Look For
Current generations love style, but we also love comfort and dependability. The "naked bra" may be a trend on the runways and in the tabloids, but you don't need to be a lingerie model or pop star to play around with your intimate apparel. This look can instead be re-created more practically (and comfortably) with a bra that has low-cut cups and funky geometric straps. Shapewear also continues to rise in popularity, so be on the lookout for even more style options to come. You may have also seen the coordinating couples' underwear trend all over social media lately, so be sure to check out our intimate apparel section for men as well.
Intimates in Pop Culture
If anything, popular culture has made intimate apparel even more fun and exciting. Rihanna famously wore a denim thong in a 2013 video, prompting fans everywhere to try recreating the look (at least for fun, if not for actual everyday wear). More recently in 2019, Lady Gaga wore nothing more than a black Natori bra, matching panties and fishnets to a Grammy's after party. And of course, the Kardashians and random instagram models have been teaching the general public the ins and outs of shapewear for years now.
When it comes to intimates, there's nothing that appears to be totally off limits with our celebrity counterparts. Whether used as outerwear or underwear, it's all fair game, and the only thing that really matters is how you feel in it.
Intimates - Looking Forward
Lingerie is always going to be a necessary part of every woman's wardrobe, but that doesn't at all mean it has to be boring. There are more design and style options now to choose from than ever before, and they fit a wide range of personal tastes. Even better, current trends with more flexible sizes are proving that high fashion intimate apparel is not just for one kind of woman. After all, being comfortable with ourselves and what we're wearing starts at the base layer.
