About Glasses

Glasses are traditionally used as a visual aid, but today they are just as much of a fashion statement as they are a practicality. Many people also feel that glasses add an upscale, intellectual look to any outfit. We have tons of different designer glasses to choose from here, covering all your favorite looks from Gucci, Saint Laurent, Fendi, Tom Ford, Kate Spade and many more. In the meantime, we'll tell you a little about the history of this cool accessory and what the best style may be for you.

Glasses are traditionally used as a visual aid, but today they are just as much of a fashion statement as they are a practicality. As a piece that draws attention to the face, glasses are worn today by both those who need vision correction as well as those who are wearing them solely for fashion purposes.

History

Glasses were definitely a practical piece of eyewear for many people as the 1900s began, but it would still be quite some time before they became a desired fashion statement. They even took a step backward thanks to repeated advertising and cinema trends in the 1930s and 1940s that saw glasses "disguising" an otherwise beautiful woman or handsome man. Nevertheless, the 1950s saw glasses suddenly becoming cool thanks to the likes of Buddy Holly and Marilyn Monroe. Buddy Holly had no choice but to wear glasses due to his poor vision, so he opted for thick frames and wore them on stage and in promotional images.

While this made glasses okay for men, Marilyn Monroe meanwhile worked her own glasses revolution for women. She personally owned a pair of cat-eye glasses that she was often photographed wearing, and in the 1953 movie, How To Marry A Millionaire, these glasses serve as a key part of her character. Cat-eye glasses remained popular for the rest of the 1950s and into the 1960s.

Nevertheless, the 1960s saw an explosion of all different kinds of shapes and styles. Both big and small, glasses were officially and firmly in style. And with the rise of pop culture media and bespectacled famous figures like Malcolm X, Jackie O, John Lennon, Elton John and many others, glasses became as much a part of fashion history as any other clothing or accessory item

Glasses have continued to fluctuate in size and shape since then-- going all-out big and thin-framed in the 1980s but shrinking in size in the 1990s and early 2000s. With the rise of Lasik corrective surgery and contact lenses, many predicted that glasses would again fall out of fashion. But with the rise of retro styles in the 2010s, this proved to be wrong. Glasses are more in style now than ever, and many people who have perfect 20/20 vision are wearing them to look just as fashionable as their counterparts who wear them for correction.

Style

Round

It's not just Harry Potter who looks fantastic in round glasses. This style looks great as both thicker frames and thinner ones, and while they look great with all kinds of outfits, try pairing it with an asymmetrical top for some cool contrast.

Square

Square framed glasses are a universal go-to because they look fantastic on the vast majority of face shapes. For a bold look, opt for dark square, thick frames and a toned-down outfit. Square frames also look great when paired with hats.

Cat Eye

The cat eye frame is a fun classic look that has come back into style. Attention is drawn to the outer corners of the frame and the eyes, so bold makeup works fantastically with this particular frame style.

Aviator

Will the aviator ever go out of style? No, and we don't want it to! The flat top and wide lenses that make up the aviator design serve as the ultimate cool / chic glasses look for both men and women. Try pairing it with a leather jacket for a classic touch.

How to find the right glasses for you

Finding the right glasses for you is as much about face shape as it is about personal style preferences. Thinner frames and lighter, neutral colors will draw attention more to your other clothing choices than the glasses themselves, and they will also allow people to see your eye color and face shape more clearly. That said, thicker frames are very fashionable and draw attention straight to your face and hairstyle.

As for the shape, this is where it pays to know the shape of your face. For example, square faces tend to do best with rounded frames to help soften their natural angles. By contrast, round faces do best with more angled frames to help add some edge. Meanwhile, heart shaped faces should avoid frames that are bottom heavy, while diamond shaped faces work great with top heavy or thin, lightly rounded glasses. Oval faces are meanwhile in luck, as they can pull off just about any frame they want.

Acetate

Acetate is a durable, plant-based plastic that also happens to be hypoallergenic. Acetate glasses frames are also highly durable, making them ideal for a lot of people. This type of material can also come in just about any color.

Sale

Glasses don't have to be crazy expensive, even when it comes to designer options. We have a wide variety of glasses in our sales section to choose from, ranging from 10 percent to upwards of 70 percent off. Whether you're going for bold frames or a more subdued look, we bet you'll find a pair here that you'll like.

Trends

Largely thanks to the modern hipster movement, bold and chunky retro glasses frames came back into the mainstream several years ago and have stayed strong. Nevertheless, The Seattle Times hailed the return of thin metal frames in 2017, particularly aviators and rounded versions. But as anyone can tell from walking around in public, it's far from just thinner frames out there. These days, any thickness of frame goes, but cat eye shapes in particular are in style.

That said, it's really glasses in general that are popular, so you can wear whatever kind you want!

Modern Pop Culture is All About Glasses

With so many celebrities being spotted in glasses these days, it almost feels easier to name those that haven't been seen in them. From Gigi Hadid's thick frames to Hugh Jackman's more subtle ones, a stylish pair of glasses seems like everyone's go-to look for a cool, casual appearance. Model Karlie Kloss has also been partnering with designer glasses brands for years now.

Look Forward

Even with advances in modern medicine and contacts, people just can't shake their love for glasses. So for a while at least, this accessory is here to stay. As for style, we're predicting that both cat eye glasses and aviators will continue to be popular, thanks to their appearances in modern movies (like Captain Marvel). Metallic frames will also continue to stay in style because they are durable, and their look is timeless. In the meantime, the versitality of plastic frames gives them longevity as well. Basically, the future will most likely bring even more options!
